In association with the Rwandan Youth Information Community Organsiation (rYico) - training for three trainers who were then mentored and supported in setting up a filmmaking group for young people at Centre Marembo in Rwanda.
PFP Volunteer Trainers:
Kerry Deacon & Duncan Speakman
The objectives of this project were -
- To provide Centre Marembo with an ongoing source of educational and fundraising videos. rYico aim to create a multi-media resource library - and educational videos in Kinyarwanda on subjects such as AIDS are particularly needed. Films designed and created by young people for young people could be especially effective in conveying important messages regarding issues such as health and relationships.
- To provide training for an activity that has the potential to generate income for young people who are currently without employment. There already exists in Kigali a definite demand for videos of weddings and similar events.
- To enable underprivileged youngsters to enjoy the satisfaction and creativity of making their own films.
Three Rwandan volunteers were given several weeks of intense training to enable them to become filmmaking trainers at this Youth Centre in Kigali. Duncan and Kerry then supported them in lesson planning, teaching activities and assessment strategies for their work with an initial group of six young people. By the end of nine weeks, trainers and trainees had, between them, made five short films and acquired all the necessary skills to continue the project without further outside help. The Young People’s Group are now working on their own educational films - material which will benefit many others as part of the media resource library at Centre Marembo.

In association with the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed, Bangladesh (CRP) - training for seven people with disabilities, enabling them to make their own videos/films for educational and awareness raising purposes.
PFP Volunteer Trainers:
Loz Evans & Jibunnessa Abdullah
The objectives in setting up the Group were –
- To provide disabled people in Bangladesh with a much-needed platform – enabling them to communicate their message to large numbers of their compatriots.
- To encourage disabled filmmakers to access their own creative talents.
- To increase awareness and understanding about disability, its causes and effects.
PFP initiated the idea for this project and provided the two volunteer trainers who have each spent several months working with wheelchair users at the Centre.
The CRP Film Group is now operational and is working on a variety of awareness raising documentaries. PFP continues to support the Group by funding the salary of an expert film trainer from Dhaka who comes to CRP twice a month to develop the skills of existing film makers and train up new members.
“The members of the crew are highly enthusiastic about their project, which will give them fresh skills and develop their potential. Says the wheelchair bound, Sabiha, who makes jewellery and is assistant supervisor and storekeeper at CRP’s Gonokbari centre,“I enjoy all aspects of editing. It opens up new horizons for me.” - The Daily Star, Dhaka, March 06, 2007To read the full story click here
